Rath NS were drawn to play in Roinn 6 this year for Sciath na Scol in a 7-a-side competition against Caheragh NS, Unionhall NS, Coppeen NS & Lisheen NS. Following two great days of football in Skibbereen, our boys had won 4/4 and the girls 2/4 meaning the boys would face Unionhall again in the final in Dunmanway. Sean & Meg were our proud captains and both teams played some lovely football. It was great that all those who have been training since the beginning of March got to play a match and the work and improvements made were evident. Most importantly, everyone enjoyed it!
Finals day came and we started our team with Cathal in goal, Paddy & Shane in the back line, Seán & Fachtna midfield with Joe & Tadhg up forward. We also had a wealth of subs ready & willing to come on and make fast changes. It was a tense start to the game with both teams fired up and very evenly matched. We were lucky with some great scores and began to pull away. The final score didn’t reflect what a well balanced match it was and we were delighted to be crowned champions, the first time since our last win in 2013, when the girls team won.
Huge thanks to John Sheehy for all his help with training. He took great pleasure in presenting the team with their gold medals the following day!
